It is not always easy to choose a fantastic bottle of wine. If you are not exactly sure what you want, the huge selection of choices available can be quite overwhelming.
Make sure you know the type of wine a person prefers if you are buying wine as a present. A highly recommended Zinfandel is not going to be a hit with an individual who is passionate about drinking Shiraz.
Choosing a wine to suit your own personal preference is much less hassle. Whether it has won awards or has been well recommended means nothing at all unless you actually love it.
There is an instant reaction when first discovering your ideal wine. In the period of experimentation when you are trying different bottles to work out what you like best, don’t splash out much any particular bottles. If a particular wine is not your ‘type’, you are unlikely to really enjoy it however expensive it is. As soon as you taste the perfect wine for your palate you will know immediately. In this moment you will gain an understanding of the passion people have for wine.
The label ‘fine’ when describing wine, means different things to different individuals and there is no fixed definition. For a number of people, anything costing ten pounds or more is a fine wine. Others using the same cost formula to identify a fine wine, might only consider a bottle that is 30 and upwards a fine wine.
As a word, ‘fine’ gives the impression of great quality, but this too is subjective because one person’s perception of quality can be totally different to another. Many producers manage to market their wines as fine because of previous excellence, regardless of the individual quality of the wine produced each year.
Although there is often some merit in an excellent past record, this is not 100% reliable. Personal taste is what really counts. If a bottle of wine is fine in your opinion, who is to say it is not? Personal experience will lead you to your favourites.
Signing up to a wine club will give you access to a selection of wines at a reduced cost, or you could pop into your local wine shop and see what is on offer.
